For all the love Wing Commander (now Star Citizen) gets, Freespace blew it out of the water as far as many people who play space sims are concerned. The story was atmospheric and compelling, the visual(for the time) and audio design was fantastic, the controls were fabulous, they had new features no one else had(capital ships worthy of the name, nebula that didn't disappoint, a flexible jump drive system), an incredibly flexible mission editor and campaign briefing, and tons more to bring to the table. They basically nailed it, in terms of being a real successor.įreespace itself, for me, remains the best space sim game around, 20 years after the original was released. Their current game, a spiritual successor to Descent(Which they also originally made.), Overload, was also just released on consoles too, as well as PC. Best thing you can do to make that happen is throw money at Revival Productions. Just a reminder on this, some of the guys who made Freespace are still making games, and have expressed interest in doing a spiritual successor to Freespace. /r/GamePhysics - Clips of game physics shining and glitchingĭesign based on /r/FlatBlue created by /u/creesch.
